Sila Yalazan – Tarlabasi vs Gezi

This publication presents Turkish photographer Sila Yalazan's photographs of the neighbourhoods around the Taksim district in Istanbul. In the 1990s, large numbers of Kurdish immigrants from south-eastern Turkey moved to Tarlabasi, mixing with the local Romani population. Up until 2013, Kurdish literacy was discouraged by the government, despite the growing population. In recent times, the neighbourhood has become home to immigrants from other neighbouring countries.
