The Story

This book is part of an experimental, process-based art project by Connie Anthes and Rebecca Gallo. The project is an exploration of the role of artists, audiences and other stakeholders in the generation of art works and art market value. This book was published following the first iteration of Make or Break, which took place in December 2015 at Firstdraft Gallery in Sydney. The gallery was rezoned as working studio and the process of making, with all of its failures, frustrations, epiphanies, hesitations and flows, became the end as well as the means. The artists engaged in a daily art-making relay, continuing or destroying the work that the other had made during their previous session, as if it was their own. The artists relied entirely on the generosity of audiences to contribute materials throughout the exhibition period.

The book’s non-hierarchical proliferation and repetition of images of space, materials and assemblages echoes the format of the exhibition itself, where all aspects of the studio process were made public and given equal weight. It also features essays by David Eastwood and Bek Conroy, and writing by Connie Anthes and Rebecca Gallo. It comes vacuum-sealed in plastic, along with a sprinkling of studio rubble.
